Expertise
For more than 45 years I have been involved in a very wide variety of applications of electronic equipment in defence systems primarily in the 20 MHz to 40 GHz frequency range. More recently (in the last 15 years or so) my involvement in commercial telecommunications has required a different approach to products and clients from that needed for defence customers.
My experience and knowledge of antenna measurement techniques and antenna test ranges have been used to design and develop new customised measurement facilities. This requires understanding of the client’s requirements. Often the actual user requirement had to be developed by me for the client using his high level inputs. My clients have used me in training and mentoring roles for their engineers and technicians so that they can fully understand and operate their test ranges. This has been of major benefit to them.
I have a broad understanding of the operational and environmental requirements of electronic systems for land-based, airborne (fixed wing, helicopters and UAVs), naval and submarine applications. This experience enables me to interpret user requirements and to propose tailored solutions. Extensive measurement experience of antennas in systems has enabled me to interpret system performance data and propose solutions to particular problems encountered when installing systems on platforms.
The exposure to both the defence and commercial markets has given me the ability to interact with local and international customers on a broad front. This interaction includes marketing as well as technical and contractual negotiations. I have established strong, long-term relationships with clients both locally and internationally.
For most of my career, in addition to technical responsibilities, I have had business management responsibilities. These included budgets, financial issues, local and international contracts, as well as personnel management (career path development, salaries, mentoring, training, etc). My negotiations with suppliers (both local and overseas) and sub-contractors have also formed an important part of conducting business with continuous cost reduction and profitability being key issues.
